Canary-wing Parakeet - Joey
Canary-wing Parakeet - Joey

Hi I'm Joey. My most favorite thing to do is eat. I like fruits, veggies, beans, pasta and homemade Birdie Bread. I'm your best friend when you have apple slices, sweet potato chunks, or corn on the cob. I'm very smart too. I throw my toys out of my toy bowl and pretend to be an innocent bystander when I'm caught. With these big black eyes I can get away with anything. I'm spoiled rotten. My "Boing" swing and my "Lots of Legs" are my favorite toys so far. At bedtime, I snuggle up to my "Cozy Corner" birdie blanket and go night night.

Joey lives in Georgia with Brandee.

Canary-wing Parakeets - Sevie & Sophia
Canary-wing Parakeets - Sevie & Sophia

This is Sevie & Sophia!! They are Canary-wings, hatched at Shady Pines in March, 2005. At 7 months old, they are funny as ever, Sevie is Mr. outgoing and very curious! Sophia is very shy and curious, except when it comes to bossing the big boy Sevie around!! She is a tuffy then! They both have learned to say "Hey baby," but we have to say Sophia has the most fun with talking (Imagine that!!) They take baths practically as often as I change their water!!! We love & adore them!!! Thanks Gloria, they filled up the sad hole in my heart after "Blue" our Grey cheek died.

Sevie & Sophia live with Brenda on the west coast of Florida.

Orange-chin Parakeet - Panchito
Orange-chin Parakeet - Panchito

I am Panchito, an Orange-chin, hatched at Shady Pines in April 2005. I am very handsome and the smartest Broto on the planet!

I am Anita's best friend, we share life from breakfast to bed time. Together we bicycle, ride in the golf-cart, clean the flowers beds and do other chores. She felt so guilty about trimming my wing feathers that she gave me this yellow airplane.

My room-mate is Chester, a Grey-cheeked Parakeet. He is handicapped and is a good friend. We are just a few feet apart and keep each other company. Occasionally I even preen his feathers.

Panchito lives with Anita in Ocala, Florida.

Orange-chin Parakeet - Lily
Orange-chin Parakeet - Lily

Lily is a female Orange-chinned parakeet hatched at Shady Pines 4/3/05. Her sounds are much different than those of other Brotos - they're melodic and very beautiful. She is quite a talented whistler, and learns new tunes quickly. She loves baths from a spray bottle, and can't ever seem to get wet enough. Her favorite toys are her Krazy Cluster and her bowl full of foot toys. Each night when the daylight begins to dim, she hangs upside down like a bat from the top of her cage and flaps her wings as hard as she can.

Lily lives in San Diego, CA in a household with 13 other Brotos.

Golden-wing Parakeet - Jade
Golden-wing Parakeet - Jade

Jade is a male Golden-winged parakeet, hatched 4/1/02 and raised at Shady Pines Aviary. He shares his cage with Grey-cheeked parakeet Chip. At the end of each day when the light begins to fade, he heads to bed under his cage floor newspapers, where he stays until morning. He is an excellent talker, and has a surprisingly loud and clear speaking voice. Bathing is one of his favorite activities, and it involves getting absolutely drenched from head to toe, then standing perfectly still until he is dry. He is the "Goodwill Ambassador" of his household, frequently visiting other birds' cages and sampling their food. His favorite playtime activity is chasing and throwing his whiffle ball.

Jade lives in San Diego, CA in a household with 13 other Brotos.

Orange-chin Parakeet - Naka Tuki
Orange-chin Parakeet - Naka Tuki

Hi, my name is Naka Tuki, I am an Orange-chin parakeet who hatched on 5-19-05. Naka means "me" in Campa, a native language of Peru, South America where Brotos live in the wild and where my new Dad grew up. Tuki is my other name because Mom and Dad liked the name! They call me Tuki or Tuk for short! When I was 8 weeks old I flew all the way from Florida to San Diego, CA to meet my new family! But I wasn't done traveling yet, Mom and Dad drove me back home with them to Glendale, Arizona!!

When I got to my new home I saw I have a neighbor bird in the cage next to mine! She is a Lovebird named Peep! We like to chatter back and forth, but mostly I ignore her! I love being out of my cage and on Mom's finger and I spend a lot of time preening. I also love my seed crock too! I haven't picked out a favorite toy yet, I am still learning what to do with them! But Mom sure has a lot of them hanging all over my cage! I love helping Mom get my morning veggies and fruit ready in the bowls each morning. I have already learned to step up every time I am asked. I really don't like going back in my cage, but I do it reluctantly because I am a good boy!

Canary-wing Parakeet - Zoey
Canary-wing Parakeet - Zoey

Zoey is a male Canary-winged parakeet hatched at Shady Pines 4/1/01. He is such a sweet and interactive Broto, with big, expressive eyes. He shares living quarters with Bailey, a White-winged parakeet. His acceptance of foods is astonishing and a testament to Gloria's weaning methods. He prefers beans over apple, and red chard stem over grapes! He plays constantly and has a particular interest in foot toys of all sorts, especially wrapped paper sticks that he spends hours holding & unwrapping.

Zoey lives in San Diego, CA in a household with 13 other Brotos.

Canary-wing Parakeet - Winkle

Hello, I am Winkle. I am a fine and handsome Canary-winged parakeet. My Birdday was 3/22/01, and I came all the way from Florida to Maine when I was only 2 months old. I got my name because when I was a little bird, I charged around and blundered into things like a miniature version of Bullwinkle Moose.

I am a toy fiend and love playing with Amazon size toys. When I'm not busy destroying my toys, I love eating everything in sight, taking baths, and teasing my Grey-Cheek friend Peep. I keep my mom amused with my antics. I'm very smart, I'm potty-trained, and I'm a good talker. I can say "Where's my kiss?" when repairmen come to the house, "Mine" if I want one of Peep's things, and "Ohhhh, naughty bird" when I've been... well, you know.

Canary-wing Parakeet - Sammy
Canary-wing Parakeet - Sammy

Hi All, my name is Sammy and I had my first adventure on 5/27/04 when I flew north to live with my new family. I was 8 weeks old at the time. The airline people who took great care of me thought I was real cute and made a big fuss over me. My new Mom and Dad were waiting nervously for me to arrive and the first thing I did was to yell at them to get me out of the carrier.. Today, one year later, I share my large enclosure with my best buddy, Detoe, who is a Canary-wing like me. We do everything together and if I get in a squabble with one of the other birds he is right there to protect me- kind of like a big brother. Dad makes us breakfast of toast with blueberries every morning then we all go back to our play gyms until Mom leaves for work. We have lots of toys to keep us busy all day. Mom still calls me her baby and I love to give her kisses and cuddle.

Sammy lives happily in Kingston, MA with Bill and Ann, three Grey-cheeks, one Canary-wing and a Budgie.

Canary-wing Parakeet - Brody G.
Canary-wing Parakeet - Brody G.

Hello everyone, I'm Brody G. I am a Canary-wing parakeet who hatched at Shady Pines in February of 2005 and now I live in Wisconsin. My human flock up here keeps saying that I have "Green Bay Packer colors" but I don't know what that means, exactly. I love to play, play, play and then play some more with all my toys. One of the most fun things to do is to take anything that is on the top of my house like toys or lids or food treats and to throw them as far as I can. Sometimes they land on the counter and sometimes I can actually get them to the floor. I also have a play gym where I can watch all my wild outdoor cousins on their feeders. I just know my food is much, much better than theirs!

Canary-wing Parakeet - Cyrus
Canary-wing Parakeet - Cyrus

I'm Cyrus, a perfect name for a handsome Canary-wing parakeet because it means "the sun" in Persian. A logical name chosen don't you think? That's because I was hatched in sunny south Florida on April 4th, a 2004 Shady Pines baby! That makes me almost 15 months old now. I'm very active, cheerful, and good-spirited. I'm still working on stepping up in my cage. I love to play with toys of various kinds. I like to eat pellets, fruit, veggies, rice and pasta -- almost anything, really. My nickname is Cyborg because I'm always hanging around waiting for handouts whenever my parents are eating their human foods.

Canary-wing Parakeet - Meka
Canary-wing Parakeet - Meka

I'm an exotic beauty Canary-wing parakeet named Meka, which means "eye" in Hawaiian. That's because when the airline agent handed the carrier to my new Mom, the first thing she saw were these pretty eyes of mine! She wanted to make sure that I was safe and sound upon my arrival because of the long flight from Florida. My hatch date is March 22nd, and I was 3 months old when I arrived on 7/2/05. As you can see I'm already adjusting to my new home in San Diego. That's a kernel in my tiny hands. I love veggies and fruits and nuts - I eat them without wasting a drop. I'm always busy, moving about my cage, playing with my toys (especially the one with bells), and visiting Cyrus. I'm learning how to step up and I currently hang upside down in my cage for nighty-night.
